There are several reasons why Droll Yankee bird feeders are so expensive. The first reason is that they are designed with a motorized perch ring which will detect when a squirrel has climbed on the perch and will start spinning, taking the squirrel for a ride before it loses its grip and is tossed from the perch.
The design also is a high-capacity tube that holds up to five pounds of bird feed and has 4 separate feeding zones.

How do the bird feeders work?
The reason these feeders are so efficient and unique is because of the tubular and high-capacity design. This allows you to put up to five pounds of feed into the tube. Most other feeders tend to leave extra food in the bottom of the feeder but with the Droll Yankee, there is a bevel design inside the feeder that evenly feeds each of the four feeding zones.
The base is also made with heavy-duty metal and is battery powered which prevents other animals from getting to the food. Birds can perch on the feeder, but as soon as something heavier than a bird puts weight on the feeder, the base spins and tosses the squirrel off of the base.
